The RAM installed on your PC determines how many applications you can run simultaneously without slowing down your PC. The physical memory consumption varies from program to program. As the total memory usage increases beyond 90% of the total installed memory, you start to see a slowdown in your PC. The freeware application MemInfo can display the total amount of memory being utilized on your PC and automatically warns you when the memory usage crosses 90% threshold . It can also defrag the memory automatically to free up unused chunks.
You can download the MemInfo utility from the website of Carthago software. The download is a portable application packed inside a ZIP file. You can extract the contents of the ZIP file to a folder and run meminfo.exe from there. As soon as you launch this application, it places an icon in the Windows system tray (notification area) to show the percentage of current memory usage. On my test PC, the total RAM is 2GB and it is showing 0.91 GB as the memory being used.
If you right-click on this system tray icon, it would display a list of all the application related processes and their respective memory consumptions, pagefile size and the total physical memory in use. It has a shortcut to open the Task Manager so that you can end the tasks that are consuming lots of your memory but are not so much productive. You can also start Memory Defragmenter from the right-click menu, which can defrag the memory to make your PC response faster. You can open the settings from the Settings → More Settings submenu.
In the Settings window, you can choose a variety of options. For example, there are options to show free memory instead of used memory, show percentage instead of the actual memory used, show a balloon hint as you hover cursor over the tray icon, automatically defrag memory when memory usage crosses 90% value and many more.
So if you are constantly grappling with memory related problems, then it is the right time to use a tool like MemInfo. It is free and portable Windows application that can not only display current memory usage but can also warn and automatically defrag your memory when it is being used heavily.
